Distance Education at a Glance

The University of Idaho Engineering Outreach program site provides a quality distance education resource in a series of guides based on two books by Barry Willis, Associate Dean for Outreach: Distance Education—Strategies and Distance Education—A Practical Guide. Material in the thirteen guides in "Distance Education at a Glance" includes "Print in Distance Education," "Distance Education and the WWW," and "Evaluation for Distance Educators."

Distance Learning Instructor Resources

The NETnet Distance Education Resource Center is definitely one to "bookmark." Created by the Northeast Texas Consortium (NETnet) and the Center for Educational Technologies, the site offers links to interactive training modules for instructors developing and designing distance education courses and materials. Modules cover such areas as establishing course objectives and goals, interaction strategies and techniques (student/student, student/instructor, and student/technology), and converting classroom courses to the "distance learning environment."

Educating the Net Generation

The e-book is available for free downloading, either in total or by chapter. The collection of articles includes the definition of just who is the "net gen" and what they mean to institutions of higher education in areas including "teaching, service, learning space, faculty development and curriculum." Articles are written by both students and educators.

MERLOT

Online Education Resources

Another good "bookmark" candidate, the Illinois Online Network's resource site is designed "not only to help faculty to develop and deliver courses in a completely online format, but also to produce courses that incorporate best practices" focusing on engaging students through the inherent "communicative nature of online learning." Tutorial subjects range from the basic elements of instruction and specific online learning and instruction strategies to promoting good communication online and providing effective feedback.

Online Higher Education Notebook

This site provides an "evolving meta-site of web resources on online higher education." It includes extensive listings for online consortia, indexes of online courses, samplings of virtual campuses, online journals and periodicals, and "selected research available online."

10 Easy Steps to Creating Your Online Course with Blackboard pdf

This Blackboard "tip sheet" is designed to provide a positive start for instructors using Blackboard for their online courses. Topics include preparing course materials, building a course skeleton, and incorporating the technology into other course components.

Texas Collaborative for Teaching Excellence

Funded through the THECB and administered by El Paso Community College, the Collaborative is designed to "promote a collegial, cooperative approach to professional development statewide...and enable colleges to share resources and avoid duplication."

The Greater Expectations National Panel Report

The web version of the Association of American Colleges and Universities report may be read in entirety from start to finish, or readers may scan specific sections of their interest. The National Panel looked at such questions as who are our college students today and what are their expectations of college; is the role and responsibility of higher education changing; what are the barriers to student readiness for college and quality learning; and what should educators be doing to provide the "kind of education that develops skills, knowledge, and a sense of responsibility."
