Accrediting Agencies

Southern Association of Colleges and Schools  (SACS)

SACS is a private, nonprofit voluntary organization founded in 1895 in Atlanta, Georgia. The purpose of the organization is to set and maintain educational standards in order to improve educational programs in schools and colleges in the eleven states of the Southeastern US and Latin America that comprise the SACS service area. SACS is one of six such service areas or regions in the United States recognized by the US Department of Education. The Commission on Colleges is the representative body of the College Delegate Assembly and is charged with carrying out the accreditation process. ACC is accredited through SACS' Commission on Colleges.

Southern Regional Education Board  (SREB)

SREB was created in 1948 as a means "to help education and government leaders work cooperatively to advance education and improve the social and economic life of the region." Texas is one of sixteen states participating in SREB's Educational Technology Cooperative. ACC offers DL courses through SREB's Electronic Campus.

To participate, colleges must comply with SREB's Principles of Good Practice. By measuring each course against a set of common standards, participating institutions are better equipped to present proposed SREB courses or programs to their designated state higher education agency for review and approval. All courses and programs listed in the Electronic Campus have been reviewed against the Principles of Good Practice by the offering colleges and have been coordinated through the state higher education agency. Texas colleges and universities follow the Principles of Good Practice adopted by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).

Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board  (THECB)

All ACC certificate and degree programs offered via Distance Learning are subject to the review and approval of the THECB. Its rules are contained in Chapter 4, Subchapter E: Approval of Distance Education Courses and Programs for Public Institutions pdf.

Distance education courses must adhere to the Principles of Good Practice For Academic Degree and Certificate Programs and Credit Courses Offered Electronically adopted by the THECB in October 1997, as developed by the Western Cooperative for Educational Telecommunications (WCET).
