Distance Learning Program Information
Distance Learning Delivery Modes

Online Courses (PCM)

PCM courses require students to have Internet access and email to complete coursework online. Students may use their own computers or the Computer Labs on campus. Many of ACC's online courses use Blackboard. Chat rooms, discussion boards, and instructional software may also be incorporated. PCM students should complete their mandatory DL Course Orientation for information on textbooks and other materials or technology requirements for the course.

Hybrid Courses (HYD)

HYD courses combine traditional face-to-face classroom instruction with computer-based distance education. The majority of the coursework is offered online via the Internet, with some classroom and/or laboratory meeting times also scheduled. As the newest DL delivery mode, Hybrid courses are currently offered on a very limited basis. The Course Schedule will provide important information about required class meeting days and times, and DL Course Orientation instructions.

For comprehensive information about the two types of Hybrid courses offered at ACC, visit the Hybrid Courses webpage.

Instructional Television Courses (ITV)

ITV courses are conducted using a series of pre-recorded video telecourse programs which may be viewed in a variety of ways. Most programs are broadcast locally on cable television; refer to the Cable TV Schedule for specific broadcast details for each course. Videotapes for all ITV classes can be viewed on campus in the Media Centers; students should check with the individual Media Center for tape availability. Most ITV telecourses can be rented for the semester from a commercial distributor. Some ITV telecourses are available in a streamed format and may be viewed online. ITV students should complete their mandatory DL Course Orientation for specific telecourse program information and other course requirements.

Print-Based Courses (PRN)

PRN courses use textbooks and study guides as the primary mode of instruction, although some may incorporate audio or videotapes, email, or the Internet for supplemental materials. The Course Schedule will indicate when Internet access is mandatory. PRN students should complete their mandatory DL Course Orientation for information on textbooks and other course requirements.

Directed Studies Courses (DIR)

DIR courses are offered on a limited basis, and require students to spend time on-site at a local social service, health, or government institution as a major part of their coursework. DIR courses may also have meetings on campus. Supplemental Internet and email activities may be required; the Course Schedule will indicate when Internet access is mandatory. DIR students should complete their mandatory DL Course Orientation for specific information on course requirements.
